The History of Direct AssaultDirect Assault formed in approximately the spring of 1983. Wayne (a drummer) found out that Jeff (a 3-year string bass veteran) had recently acquired an electric guitar. A year later, Kevin was enlisted to sing and subsequently taught to play bass by Jeff. They continued as a trio that morphed into a quartet as singers came and went. Direct Assault finally disbanded in August of 1987 to move onto college and other endeavors. In November of 2013, Wayne suggested getting back together to jam when he comes to town. Jeff upped the ante and proposed renting a space and having a party. Kevin was in. They set forth with the goal of playing "what we want to play" for enjoyment. They each picked 10 songs meaningful to them and began practicing separately. As the first gig neared, Kevin pulled out due to lack of time. Jeff and Wayne enlisted Gwen and Tim to join. They practiced together for the first time on June 8th, 2014 and played 31 songs for friends only 48 hours later. That's what they do now...a continuous cycle of picking songs they love followed by a few months of individual practice, 2 days of group practice, an open performance for friends and whomever else wanders in and finally a painful process of cutting songs to make room for a new batch. This band does not play Mustang Sally. They play songs they are passionate about. Many performances hit the mark. Some miss the mark. Many of the songs they play are popular while others haven't been heard by the audience ever until the band performed them...and a subset of those hadn't even been heard by three of the band members until somebody picked them for performance.
